Since truly breaking through on the indie-rock scene in 2014 with Bury Me at Makeout Creek, few have captured emotions- both euphoric and catastrophic- as vividly as Mitski. Following up that great album with additional fantastic offerings, Puberty 2 Be the Cowboy, and Laurel Hell, Mitski has continued to amaze.

And now, Mitski has announced her new album, The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We which will be released on September 15, 2023. The album is Mitski’s first since 2020’s Laurel Hell, and it was recorded in Los Angeles with producer Patrick Hyland.

In an interview with Consequence, Mitski said that the album is about “the feeling of being in a world that is hostile to you, but also being a part of that world and being complicit in its hostility.” She described the album as “a meditation on the nature of evil and the nature of love.”

“The best thing I ever did in my life was to love people,” Mitski adds of the album’s themes. “I wish I could leave behind all the love I have, after I die, so that I can shine all this goodness, all this good love that I’ve created onto other people.” Pre-orders for the record are ongoing.

The first single, “Bug-Like an Angel,” was released on July 26, 2023. The song is a slow-burning ballad about the destructive power of love.

“The Land Is Inhospitable and So Are We Bug-Like an Angel” is Mitski’s most ambitious album to date. It is a dark and challenging album, but it is also a beautiful and rewarding one. Mitski’s fans are sure to be captivated by this new chapter in her musical journey.
